In the verdant embrace of Sonoma County, California, a unique architectural gem known as Spyglass by Hometree has taken root, courtesy of Artistree Home. This 300-square-foot residence, perched within an expansive 11-acre forested lot in Occidental, epitomizes innovative design while harmonizing with its natural surroundings. Completed in 2023, the project is a testament to the creative vision of Will Beilharz and his team, who drew inspiration from the simple childhood joy of peering through a leaf tube.
The structure of Spyglass is ingeniously centered around a large redwood tree, which not only anchors the design but also elevates it – iterally. Hovering 25 feet above the forest floor, the treehouse stands on slender steel posts, minimizing its ecological footprint. Its unique vaulted form is a nod to the organic shapes of nature, with dynamic cuts at either end of the cylindrical shape, evoking the movement of a folded leaf.
The exterior is clad in rust-textured metal diamond shingles, meticulously chosen to resemble redwood bark, blending the structure seamlessly into the forest. This linear abode features a walkway, a cozy kitchenette, and a bathroom adorned with penny round tiles that echo the curvature of the treehouse. At the heart of this residence is the bedroom, which opens onto a back terrace complete with a cedar hot tub, inviting relaxation amid the treetops.
Inside, the treehouse is a marvel of wooden craftsmanship. Tongue-and-groove panelling sweeps through the interior, mimicking the sensation of traversing a hollowed-out log. This continuity of design draws the eye outward to the fully glazed back wall, offering an uninterrupted view of the forest and the central tree piercing through the terrace.
Beilharz emphasized the importance of whimsy and nature in design, noting the dual sense of calm and excitement that the space evokes. The sustainable aspects of Spyglass are noteworthy, with triple-layer insulation, eco-friendly wood cladding, and a heat pump water heater, reflecting a commitment to environmental stewardship.
Spyglass is more than a luxurious retreat; it’s a model for sustainable, replicable design. Artistree Home offers it as a prefab unit, adaptable to various landscapes and tree configurations. This approach ensures that the joy and discovery inherent in the treehouse experience can be shared widely, inspiring a deeper connection with nature.
The project stands as a beacon of innovative design and sustainable living, reminiscent of other lofty treehouse endeavors such as BIG’s birdhouse-covered hotel in Swedish Lapland. Yet, Spyglass holds a unique place in the architectural landscape, promising a blend of luxury, imagination, and ecological sensitivity that beckons visitors to rediscover the wonder of nature.
