Poltrona Frau marks a milestone in design history with the limited edition release of the Dezza armchair, celebrating its 60th anniversary while honoring the creative vision of legendary architect Gio Ponti. First introduced in 1965, Dezza remains an enduring symbol of Italian craftsmanship, and this latest re-edition not only preserves its artistic legacy but also propels it into a new era of sustainability and exclusivity.
Poltrona Frau’s reinterpretation of Dezza maintains the chair’s signature silhouette – clean square lines paired with tufted cushions and elegantly curved armrests – while incorporating modern elements. The slim, angular legs retain their poised stance, and intricate button or hardware details ensure that every angle of the chair is a visual delight. This version, however, introduces a significant material innovation: the upholstery is crafted from Pelle Frau Impact Less, a sustainable leather that aligns with the company’s commitment to eco-conscious production. By using certified suppliers, chromium-free tanning, and CO2 emission offsetting, Poltrona Frau continues to redefine luxury with environmental responsibility.
The chair’s new color palette – Panna and a striking Iris blue – pays homage to Ponti’s vibrant interiors at the Hotel Parco dei Principi in Sorrento, echoing the iconic majolica floors of the space. Yet, what truly sets this edition apart is its upholstery pattern, a rare discovery from Ponti’s archive. The design features a digitally printed reproduction of a previously unpublished illustration, depicting 26 stylized hands, each with a distinct identity. From ‘the gloved hand’ to ‘the fortune teller’s hand,’ these whimsical details add a playful yet sophisticated touch to the chair, reinforcing the idea of craftsmanship as an extension of human creativity.
“Ponti’s hand represents the human ability to imagine, to go beyond the world of objects to enter those of theatre, poetry, and playfulness,” notes Salvatore Licitra, curator of the Gio Ponti Archives. This sentiment resonates deeply with Poltrona Frau’s dedication to preserving and evolving classic designs with meaning and artistry.
Only 60 pieces of this anniversary edition will be produced, each bearing a numbered metal tag and a certificate of authenticity. Initially available online in select European markets until April 1st, the armchair will later be offered at exclusive retail locations worldwide. This release is more than just a tribute – it is a testament to Poltrona Frau’s commitment to carrying Ponti’s vision forward with authenticity and reverence.
“We are thrilled to present this historic piece from our catalogue in a new guise,” says Nicola Coropulis, CEO of Poltrona Frau. “With our re-editions, we always strive to deepen the cultural significance of the original design, offering something truly exclusive that not only enhances materials and finishes but also celebrates the creative process behind the product.”
Poltrona Frau’s revival of the Dezza armchair is a rare convergence of heritage and innovation, ensuring that Gio Ponti’s genius continues to shape contemporary interiors for years to come.
