Australian artist and goldsmith Colin Burn considers that two-player strategy board game played by millions of people worldwide deserves luxury uniforms, in his case world’s most expensive. So, he created unique chess setup called the Pearl Royale and put it up for sale for $4 million.
This chess set will be limited to only three sets, each hallmarked, numbered, and authenticated by Colin Burn himself.
The Pearl Royale is to be made in a strictly limited edition of just three sets, making it not only a luxurious purchase but also an exclusive collector’s item. Each set is hallmarked, numbered, and personally authenticated by Burn himself, adding to its uniqueness and collectibility.
Creating the Pearl Royale was a tremendous challenge due to the intricate details involved. Each of the 32 pieces is crafted from 18-carat white gold and adorned with high-grade diamonds. Adding to their splendor, royal blue sapphires and black/white South Sea pearls are used to designate the pieces, inspiring the set’s name and giving each piece a distinct identity.
The craftsmanship doesn’t stop at the visual appeal. The bottom of each chess piece is designed with the same meticulous attention to detail, featuring finely polished edges that ensure smooth movement across the crystal glass and diamond-encrusted chessboard. This level of detail is what sets the Pearl Royale apart, making it not just a playable set but also a major art installation.
Last year, the Pearl Royale Chess Set was showcased at an art gallery in Beverly Hills, California, drawing attention for its extreme beauty and splendor. As the most expensive chess set in the world crafted from such luxurious materials, it comes complete with all necessary diamond and gem certification, ensuring its authenticity and value.
This chess set raises important questions about the intersection of art, luxury, and traditional games. How does one justify the transformation of a simple board game into an artifact of extreme luxury? And who decides the value of such a transformation? For collectors and enthusiasts, the Pearl Royale Chess Set isn’t just an acquisition – it’s a treasure that offers both aesthetic pleasure and a tangible connection to the centuries-old game of chess. It symbolizes a bridge between the past and the present, between tradition and opulence, making it a truly unique and timeless piece.
