The UR-101 T-Rex is Urwerk’s latest take on its inaugural wristwatch, blending history with a bold new aesthetic. Originally released in 1997, the UR-101 helped establish Urwerk’s reputation for avant-garde timepieces. Despite its place in the brand’s history, the model had yet to see a true revival – until now. However, rather than a simple reissue, Urwerk has given the UR-101 a dramatic new identity with its signature “T-Rex” finish.

The new UR-101 stays true to the original’s wandering hours display, featuring a semicircular minute track across the top of the case. However, the smooth, futuristic lines of the original have been replaced by a textured guilloché pattern inspired by reptilian scales. The bronze case is hand-painted and designed to age over time, creating a unique patina for each piece. This transformation is not entirely unexpected from Urwerk, which has a history of reinterpreting its designs in unconventional ways. Previous T-Rex models, such as the UR-105 and UR-100V, showcased similar textures, but the UR-101 may be the purest expression of the concept due to its minimalist dial layout.

One of the most noticeable updates is the relocation of the crown. Originally positioned on the side of the case, it now sits at the top, making time-setting more intuitive. The case has also been slightly enlarged, measuring 41mm across and 11.86mm thick, improving wearability while maintaining a compact profile. Paired with a black textile-style rubber strap lined with calfskin leather, the watch balances ruggedness with refinement.

Beneath the black PVD-coated steel caseback lies the UR-1.01V movement, an automatic caliber based on a Vaucher manufacture base with Urwerk’s proprietary wandering hours module. The time display consists of two rotating satellites, each carrying six numerals. As the current hour moves across the 180-degree minute track, the next hour gradually appears, continuing the cycle. The lime green numerals are coated with Super-LumiNova, ensuring legibility even in low light.

With a price tag of CHF38,000 (approximately US$43,000) before taxes, the UR-101 T-Rex represents Urwerk’s latest entry-level offering. Though its aggressive design may divide opinions, it aligns with the brand’s philosophy of pushing boundaries. Given that only 100 pieces will be produced, it is likely that Urwerk has additional variations in mind for the future. Whether the T-Rex edition becomes a sought-after collectible or merely a stepping stone to other iterations, one thing is certain – Urwerk’s approach to watchmaking remains as unconventional as ever.
