Swiss luxury watchmaker Audemars Piguet has partnered with renowned New York-based artist Brian Donnelly, better known as KAWS, to create a bold and innovative timepiece. The collaboration brings the artist’s iconic Companion character to the Royal Oak Concept Tourbillon, resulting in a watch that blends high art with exceptional watchmaking craftsmanship. Limited to just 250 pieces, this special edition challenges traditional notions of both art and horology.
At the heart of the design is a three-dimensional representation of KAWS’ Companion . Encased beneath a sapphire crystal, the figure appears pressed against the glass, creating an illusion of interaction between art and observer. The watch’s tourbillon, prominently placed in the chest of the Companion , seamlessly integrates mechanical precision with artistic expression. To accommodate the figure, the time display is cleverly moved to the dial’s outer edge, allowing the artwork to dominate the center stage.
The 43mm case is crafted from sandblasted Grade 5 titanium, paired with a black ceramic bezel. Adding to its distinctiveness, the bezel screws are replaced with KAWS’ signature “X” motif. The titanium hands, designed with precision, follow the perimeter of the dial, with the minute hand skeletonized for enhanced readability. Completing the aesthetic is a textured light gray calfskin leather strap that complements the watch’s modern and artistic flair.
This timepiece is powered by Audemars Piguet’s in-house AP2979 Tourbillon manual movement, designed specifically to preserve the visual impact of KAWS’ design. The movement, visible through a sapphire crystal caseback, offers a power reserve of 72 hours, ensuring performance matches the artistry. Every detail reflects the meticulous craftsmanship synonymous with Audemars Piguet while embracing KAWS’ playful and provocative style.
Priced at CHF 200,000 (approximately 6,221), this limited-edition watch epitomizes the fusion of high art and haute horology. It represents a bold step in Audemars Piguet’s journey to embrace contemporary culture, further cementing its position as an innovator in the luxury watch industry. This collaboration not only redefines what a watch can be but also highlights the timeless relevance of art in modern design.
