Audi CEO Gernot Döllner describes the Q6 e-tron Off-Road Concept as a “reinterpretation of quattro,” a statement that hints at the brand’s ambition to revolutionize all-wheel-drive performance in the electric era. The concept boasts an increase in ride height of 6.3 inches (160mm) and a widened track by 9.8 inches (250mm).
The key to its off-road prowess lies in its advanced portal axles, a feature commonly seen in military vehicles. These axles not only raise the vehicle’s ground clearance significantly but also provide a 50% increase in torque at the wheels compared to the standard Q6 e-tron. This is a major leap from the 20-30% gain achieved with conventional portal axles.
The Q6 e-tron Off-Road Concept is powered by a dual-motor electric drivetrain producing 380kW (510hp) and an eye-watering 9,883 lb-ft (13,400Nm) of torque at peak bursts. While these numbers may seem exaggerated, Audi clarifies that the maximum torque is only available for short 10-second bursts when climbing extreme inclines. With this setup, the SUV can conquer slopes up to 45 degrees, making it a true off-road beast.
However, with great power comes some limitations. The increased ride height and off-road tuning have led Audi to cap the top speed at 108 mph (175 km/h), a reasonable trade-off given its extreme capabilities.
Audi has equipped the Q6 e-tron Off-Road Concept with heavy-duty modifications to match its rugged nature. The new flared wheel arches accommodate massive off-road tires, including studded options for snow and ice. The redesigned front and rear bumpers offer improved approach and departure angles, while additional LED lights on the front grille and roof rack ensure visibility in challenging environments.
Though Audi refers to the vehicle as a “concept,” the use of the term “prototype” by CEO Gernot Döllner suggests that some elements of this extreme Q6 e-tron could make it into production. The company has previously released off-road-ready versions of its electric SUVs, such as the Q8 e-tron Dakar Edition, making a future production model a possibility.
For now, the Audi Q6 e-tron Off-Road Concept is set to make its public debut at the FAT International Ice Race in Austria on February 1. Audi enthusiasts can also follow the brand’s social media channels for footage of the prototype in action. Whether this beast hits the market or remains a showcase of innovation, one thing is clear – Audi is serious about bringing electric power to the off-road world.
