In the world of motorcycles, where engineering and aesthetics often collide, the BMW K1600 GTL stands as a testament to the blend of technology and comfort. With its six cylinders, 1,649 cc engine, and a whopping 113 liters of storage space, this bike is designed for long, luxurious rides across the country. Its suite of electronic aids and the symphony of its inline six pistons make it a favorite for cross-country adventures. Yet, its complexity makes it a less likely candidate for customization.

Enter Yuichi Yoshizawa of CW Zon, a visionary craftsman from Japan known for transforming the unlikeliest motorcycles into bespoke pieces of art. Yoshizawa-san took the high-tech BMW K1600 GTL and envisioned it as something radically different: a sleek café racer dubbed ‘Lioness,’ reflecting its new ferocious and streamlined persona.

The transformation began with the bike stripped to its core components – engine and frame – laying bare the challenges ahead. The bulky radiator, long swingarm, and intricate wiring were just the beginning. A major alteration was the replacement of the original chunky cast aluminum frame. CW Zon constructed a custom trellis frame, which not only supported the engine more elegantly but also slimmed down the bike’s profile, accentuating its powerful engine.

Maintaining some original elements, the K1600’s OEM swingarm and shaft drive were kept but refinished to integrate seamlessly with the new design, sporting polished and black contrasts. The rear wheel, a 17” from a BMW R nineT, was adapted to fit the different swingarm orientation of the K1600.

Handling and aesthetics were further enhanced with the addition of another R nineT wheel at the front, both shod with Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa tires for superior grip and performance. The suspension system got an upgrade with Öhlins Blackline components, and braking was boosted with high-performance Beringer parts.

The visual aspect of ‘Lioness’ is striking, with a handmade fuel tank and tailpiece that flow into custom fenders. The polished metalwork is a display of craftsmanship, culminating in a rear cowl that tapers elegantly. Details like the BMW roundel, an air scoop atop the tank, and a custom-engraved nickname add layers of personality. Even functional elements like the front fender are dual-purposed as a fork protector, demonstrating thoughtful design.

The front of the bike features custom yokes with Gilles Tooling clip-ons equipped with Motogadget components, including grips, micro switches, bar-end turn signals, and mirrors. The centerpiece is a Motogadget speedometer, housed in a bespoke bracket that anchors it to the upper yoke.

Lighting and control modifications include a new LED headlight, redesigned foot controls, and a custom radiator shroud. The exhaust system, a muscular design by CW Zon, merges six headers into two commanding mufflers, echoing the bike’s robust aesthetics and performance.

The audacity of Yuichi Yoshizawa to reimagine the BMW K1600 GTL into the ‘Lioness’ café racer showcases his unique talent and vision. This bike has transformed from a plush tourer to a 160-horsepower, high-performance racer, making it a coveted ride on the must-experience list of motorcycle enthusiasts.

CW Zon continues to inspire with their creations, which can be followed on their social media channels, Facebook and Instagram, with imagery captured beautifully by Kazuo Matsumoto.
